Raphael Lang
Sub-Principal Cello with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, French/American cellist Raphael Lang, also performs regularly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, and United Strings of Europe.
Concert tours with the Vivo Piano Trio, Arcana Ensemble and other chamber music groups have brought him as far afield as Russia, the Baltic, and the United States.
With the support of the Leverhulme Trust and the Shoresh Charitable Trust, Raphael graduated with distinction (DipRAM) from the Royal Academy of Music in London under David Strange and Mats Lidström. He was a winner of the May Mukle Prize, the David Martin/Florence Hooton Prize, the Wolfe Wolfinsohn Prize, the Robert Alva Memorial Prize, the Sir Peter Halling Prize, and received the Ruth Waddell Fund Award. He was designated a Leverhulme Mentor for the year 2012/2013.
He has been a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the European Union Youth Orchestra, and the LSO Strings Experience Scheme, and has participated in masterclasses with Truls Mørk, Raphael Walfisch, Colin Carr, Robert Cohen, David Finckel, Christoph Henkel and Valter Despalj.
Together with the Arcana Ensemble, Raphael is a Concordia Foundation alumnus.
Raphael performs on a fine 19th Century French instrument.
